Sweet Anise, Macedonian Anise

(Foeniculum vulgare, fam. Umbelliferae)

The fruit is a schizocarp consisted of two mericarps, easily separated under pressure. It has a prolate form, yellow-brown color, pleasant aroma, aromatic, sweet and bitter taste.

The drug contains ethereal oil, rich with anethole, liquid oil, proteins, sugars, etc.

Use

It is used in the same way as the cumin – as a carminative, laxative, galactagogue, and expectorant.

The fruits are applied in mixtures of teas against stomach diseases, for releasing gases from the digestive tract, against constipation, as well as in teas for easier coughing out thick phlegm from the lungs, for relieving of cough, and against asthma.
